Satellite Television Leader Also Announces Free Preview of Exclusive NASCAR HOTPASS only on DIRECTV Service During Daytona 500
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 2007--DIRECTV, the nation's leading satellite television service provider, is revolutionizing the NASCAR experience once again with the DIRECTV ZONE, a mobile luxury lounge located within the infield at select NASCAR events and featuring a variety of high-tech amenities, including full access to the exclusive new NASCAR Hot Pass only on DIRECTV. The Zone will debut at the Daytona 500 on February 18 at Daytona International Speedway, and appear at 17 races throughout the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season giving fans in attendance the opportunity to celebrate race day in style.
To kickoff the season, DIRECTV will also provide subscribers at home the chance to experience the new NASCAR HOTPASS service during the Daytona 500, free of charge, through a free preview it will offer during the race. The free preview will be available on channels 794-799.
"NASCAR and DIRECTV are a winning combination, and we're making an effort to pull out all of the stops in 2007 for the fans watching at home and those attending NASCAR events," said David Hill, president of DIRECTV Entertainment. "While the NASCAR HOTPASS service will redefine the NASCAR viewing experience, the DIRECTV ZONE will bring the race-day experience to another level as well."
The DIRECTV ZONE will feature viewing areas for fans to experience the NASCAR HOTPASS service in style, via five separate screens/channels (one for each of the five drivers). In addition, the DIRECTV ZONE will feature a roof-top lounge where fans will have the ultimate birds-eye view of the race on the track.
Every fan in attendance at these 17 select NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races will receive a lanyard card upon entry to the track equipped with a special bar code. Dedicated DIRECTV ZONE ambassadors will direct fans to visit one of six mobile pit boxes located around the track. Each pit box is equipped with four computer screens where fans can swipe their lanyard cards to find out if they've won an instant seat upgrade to the DIRECTV ZONE or other prizes. When a winning fan is identified, ambassadors will provide escorts via special DIRECTV ZONE golf carts for each winner. In addition, winning fans will have the chance to meet NASCAR personalities including long-time SpeedChannel broadcaster Larry McReynolds, as well as Crew Chief Club or DIRECTV race team members.
NASCAR HOTPASS only on DIRECTV features five dedicated driver channels offering multiple camera angles, real-time car telemetry, in car audio communication and a dedicated announcer team. The first five drivers to be featured on NASCAR HOTPASS in Daytona will be Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Dale Earnhardt Incorporated), Kevin Harvick (Richard Childress Racing), Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports), Tony Stewart (Joe GibbsRacing) and Michael Waltrip (Waltrip-Jasper Racing). The new service, combined with race day telecasts and nascar.com coverage, will give fans the most comprehensive and powerful NASCAR experience possible. DIRECTV customers can now purchase the service at a full-season package price of $99 or on a pay-per-week basis for $29.99. More information is available on www.directv.com/hotpass.
DIRECTV is an official sponsor of NASCAR and an official sponsor of Richard Childress Racing (RCR) and the # 07 car.

DIRECTV Delivers on 4Q Numbers – 15.95 million subscribers and counting!
SOURCE: SKYReport.com; 02.08.07
‘DIRECTV was expected to report an uptick in subscribers and an improvement in financial numbers for the fourth quarter. The satellite TV giant did that and much more.
DIRECTV reported 275,000 net customer additions for the three-month period that ended Dec. 31, putting the service’s overall subscriber count at 15.95 million.
Gross subscriber additions for the satellite TV giant numbered 1.021 million, an increase of 6 percent when compared to fourth quarter 2005. The net subscriber additions and gross customer counts met most - and beat some - Wall Street expectations. The subscriber numbers were helped by a drop in monthly churn, which went from 1.7 percent during the same period last year to 1.57 percent for fourth quarter 2006. That represented the biggest improvement in churn figures in more than three years, the company said.
Also, during a conference call with analysts, DIRECTV executives said about 200,000 customers were upgraded to HDTV service during the fourth quarter. DIRECTV CEO Chase Carey said he expects 2007 subscriber growth to mirror what happened last year.
Carey also said this year will be a big deal for the satellite TV company’s move into a robust HDTV slate. The expanded HDTV offering is relying on the launch of a new satellite, set for the second half of the year.
DIRECTV said fourth quarter net income more than doubled to $356 million when compared to the same period last year. Fourth quarter revenues increased 16 percent to $4.18 billion, the company said.’

DIRECTV – 2007’s HDTV Leader
SOURCE: SkyReport.com, Tuesday January 02, 2007
‘It’s no surprise that high-def TV had a killer year in 2006 as sales skyrocketed both online and at retailers nationwide. With the popularity of the technology reaching new levels, some researchers have projected more than 3.2 million flat-panel HDTVs to be sold to U.S. consumers during the past several weeks.
So with all those new TV sets in American homes, what can viewers expect from HDTV in 2007?
According to one of our favorite new HDTV experts, expect DIRECTV to firmly establish itself as the HDTV king as the company unveils its much-anticipated high-def expansion. HDTV writer Phil Swann (a.k.a. the Swanni, he tells us) said in 2007 DIRECTV will increase its national high-def lineup thanks to two new satellites dedicated largely to HD. Swann(i) said once the birds go up, DIRECTV will have more capacity than any other pay-TV provider.
Swann also said that once DIRECTV expands its capacity, the market will see a flurry of new HDTV channels launching in late spring or early summer. “Until now, a new HDTV channel has had to struggle to get a cable or satellite operator to add it,” he said. “But DIRECTV’s two new satellites will change that in a heartbeat; they will have room for all.” Likely candidates for HD launches, Swann said, could include CNN, E!, TBS, FX and The Sci-Fi Channel.
Other things the Swanni foresees in 2007 for HD: Cable operators will continue to drop analog channels to make room for HDTV, HDTV prices will continue to drop, Apple will introduce an HDTV service and multicasting will continue to struggle.’
